Mathematics

The mathematics program at GCHS is designed to accommodate all abilities across grades 9 through 12.  The mathematics department offers Resource Math 1-3, Math 1-3, Honors Math 1-3, Modern Math, Math 1050, and AP Calculus.  Our curriculum aims to prepare students for post-secondary applications, whether that be joining the workforce or pursuing higher level academics.

The department offers after school tutoring on Thursdays or by appointment to provide extra personal support.  Math placement is not fixed.  Students can move throughout the curriculum based on their abilities, NWEA assessments, classroom assessments and post-secondary goals.   Staff and students demonstrate their social-emotional intelligence by working on challenging math concepts in a supportive, respectful environment.  Teamwork counts!

English Language Arts

Throughout the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum at Grand County High School, we will examine the human condition, not only through literature and writing, but through talking, thinking, imagining, creating, and collaborating.  The emphasis in their 9th through 12th Grade courses will be for students to find their own voices—in writing, creating and communicating. We will also focus on mechanics that will aid students in finding and expressing their voices, including grammar, vocabulary and daily writing. Through the curriculum, students will build their social and emotional learning and gain preparation for post-secondary education and meaningful life opportunities.  The courses have high expectations for students because they are based on a belief that each student has a unique and untapped potential. They are active classrooms in which students are engaged in talking, writing, reading, creating, and thinking on a daily basis. In addition, the courses will be several significant writing projects, creative projects, oral presentations, as well as vocabulary, grammar, literature and other content quizzes. In each ELA classroom, students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

Tutoring hours for ELA are held each Tuesday after school from 3-4 pm.

Spanish

The Spanish Language program at Grand County High School is designed following the ACTFL (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) guidelines. It aims to develop proficiency in reading, listening, and speaking with a communicative purpose within a meaningful context and engaging content. Authentic texts, technology, media, artistic, and ludic (games) activities are implemented to develop, practice, and assess those skills. The students research and explore various aspects of the Spanish language and culture through collaborative activities. The pedagogical approach is thematic and holistic and designed to fit the needs of each student's academic profile.
